So I just bought a used Saab 9000 ECU off Ebay for $69. Next step is to solder on a header for the BDM (background debug mode) connector and make a parallel cable to connect to my PC. Then, I can download T5Suite and start playing...

Finally feel like I have a proper car in which I could do things like take my boss to the airport.

Lots of little "Airplane"-y touches in this cabin.

Not a bad looking bay, I was expecting it to be a lot more cramped inside. Where is the trans dipstick?

This photo makes the paint look half-decent, but really there is a fair amount of chipping and swirling. I might see what I can do about it short of a new paint job, but I'm not really too concerned about it.

So they had the 73k square foot building backed by this bad boy:

27 Liter, Cat 3412 V12 Diesel with a 380kW gen set. 540hp at 2100RPM, thats 1350 lbs of torque, baby.

Sadly, after I'm done with the electrical design this sucker will no longer have much purpose. No Operating Rooms to keep online, no lights to feed (they are going to battery packs)... just a few boiler igniters, the battery charger and block heater (although, erm, those aren't needed while its running...), the fire alarm control panel, and one elevator.

I guess someone could run a massive data farm up in that piece if they wanted... Don't remember the numbers offhand but I think hospitals have to keep something like 24 hours of fuel on hand. At roughly 10gph (going by the 1gph/50hp rule-of-thumb) I'd think they would have more.

Happy new year!

I saw a burning branch today on some power lines. Also, its cold.
And windy. Perhaps the wind had to do with the branch. Sucks that something as likely as that can cause outages. Eventually, the branch just burned away and fell, but it had already done its job of popping some fuse upstream somewhere, taking out a whole neighborhood and an old folks' home. On the upside, Grid was there in 10 minutes with two bucket trucks.

Maybe moving West in the spring. Could be interesting.

Lighting Up In Amsterdam
By JOHN TIERNEY

AMSTERDAM - Arjan Roskam, the creator of the award-winning marijuana blend named
''Arjan's Haze,'' has dozens of pictures of celebrity visitors on the
wall of his coffee shop in Amsterdam. He's got Eminem, Lenny Kravitz,
Alicia Keys, Mike Tyson -- but so far, unfortunately, not a single
White House drug czar.

The czars have preferred to criticize from afar. In the past, they've
called Dutch drug policy ''an unmitigated disaster,'' bemoaning
Amsterdam's ''stoned zombies'' and its streets cluttered with
''junkies.'' Anti-pot passion has only increased in the Bush
administration, which has made it a priority to combat marijuana.

More than half a million Americans are arrested annually for possessing
it. The Bush administration can't even abide it being used for medical
purposes by the terminally ill. Why risk having any of it fall into the
hands of young people who could turn into potheads, crack addicts and
junkies?

But if America's drug warriors came here, they would learn something
even if they didn't sample any of the dozens of varieties of marijuana
sold legally in specially licensed coffee shops. They could see that
the patrons puffing on joints generally don't look any more zombielike
than the crowd at an American bar -- or, for that matter, a
Congressional subcommittee listening to a lecture on the evils of
marijuana.

And if they talked to Peter Cohen, a Dutch researcher who has been
studying drug use for a quarter-century, they would discover something
even more disorienting. Even though marijuana has been widely available
since the 1970's, enough to corrupt a couple of generations, the
Netherlands has not succumbed to reefer madness.

The Dutch generally use drugs less than Americans do, according to
national surveys in both countries (and these surveys might understate
Americans' drug usage, since respondents are less likely to admit
illegal behavior). More Americans than Dutch reported having tried
marijuana, cocaine and heroin. Among teenagers who'd tried marijuana,
Americans were more likely to be regular users.

In a comparison of Amsterdam with another liberal port city, San
Francisco, Cohen and other researchers found that people in San
Francisco were nearly twice as likely to have tried marijuana. Cohen
isn't sure exactly what cultural and economic factors account for the
different usage patterns in America and the Netherlands, but he's
confident he can rule out one explanation.

''Drug policy is irrelevant,'' says Cohen, the former director of the
Center for Drug Research at the University of Amsterdam. It's quite
logical, he says, to theorize that outlawing drugs would have an
impact, but experience shows otherwise, both in America and in some
European countries with stricter laws than the Netherlands but no less
drug use.

The good news about drugs, Cohen says, is that the differences among
countries aren't all that important -- levels of addiction are
generally low in America as well as in Europe. The bad news is that the
occasional drug fad get hyped into a crisis that leads to bad laws.

''Prohibition does not reduce drug use, but it does have other
impacts,'' he says. ''It takes up an enormous amount of police time and
generates large possibilities for criminal income.''

In the Netherlands, that income goes instead to coffee-shop owners and
to the government, which exacts heavy taxes. It also imposes strict
regulations on what goes on in the coffee shop, including who can be
served (no minors) and how much can be sold (five grams to a customer).
Any unruly behavior or public disturbances can quickly close down a
shop.

To avoid problems at the Green House, Roskam has closed-circuit cameras
and a staff that urges novices to stick with small doses, and to
protect their lungs by taking hits from a vaporizer. Unlike street
buyers in America, customers know exactly what strength they're
getting, which is especially useful for the hundreds of people with
multiple sclerosis and other ailments who use his marijuana medicinally.

Roskam sneers at the street products in the United States, which he
considers overpriced and badly blended. But he acknowledges there's one
feature in the American market he can't compete with.

''Drugs are just less interesting here,'' he said. ''One of my best
friends here never smoked cannabis, never wanted to even try my
products. Then when she was 32 she went to America on holiday and
smoked for the first time. I asked her why, and she said: 'It was more
fun over there. It was illegal.' ''

My town got overrun by some zombies. Pretty standard. They were trying to get into my house and eat our brains. Again, standard zombie fare. But then, they had tanks. What kind of zombie can drive a tank? I dunno. Also, there were zombie bees flying around everywhere. Don't ask me how I knew they were zombie bees, plus also they weren't attacking us.

So, we were busily blowing zombies away with mysterious shotguns that never ran out of ammo while they bulldozed my neighbor's house.. then we went outside for some reason.. they got my brother.. and my little sister... then they were trying to kidnap my little sister, and it turns out she caused come kind of mutation in the zombie virus that spread through the horde, either killing them all or turning them back to normal, I can't remember. Doesn't matter. I think it spread through the zombie bees. Boy, there was a lot of them zombie bees!

Then I woke up.

Right up and over the bumper it went...

Taking out mostly everything ahead of the cylinder head

but not the windshield.

the front cross member where the hood latches took the most abuse

the front of the frame that meets the bumper got moved over from the deer's lateral inertia (it was running from my right to left pretty fast)

as did the front quarter panels

the wiper assembly got broken by the hood as it got pushed back

it prolly would have still run if the distributor cap didn't get unseated...or if it wasn't made in fucking mexico!

Crazy... all the way to the bank! This is very much a rant, if you're not in the mood to read, skip to the last paragraph which is admittedly also quite long by itself.

The world is flooded with mp3 players, right?

Think back to the early '90s (specifically, 1994 and Apple's Quicktake 100). The advent of the consumer-level digital camera. It wasn't long before the convenience and portability prospects of this new technology were so unavoidable that an unceasing push for better, smaller, less-expensive models took hold. Obviously, we are very much in the grips of this technological motivation to this day, with consumers buying upwards of 20 million digital cameras a year. Although photography was already an established medium, its safe to say that digital cameras (not to mention video -- that's a whole other story) have revolutionized the attitude of our society towards visual media as well as our ability to access and share it. It wasn't long ago for most of us that a photograph was something to be considered, planned, and carefully executed. With both monetary and physical limitations inherent in the cost of purchasing and developing film and the very real space requirements of carrying many rolls on one's person, it was only natural for any good photographer, or anyone with a sense of economic responsibility, to take the time to set up each of their photographs carefully. Today, we live in the digital age. A typical digital camera has the ability to take as many as 500 high-quality pictures without swapping media. Thus, any given photograph is no big deal. Why should it be? If you don't get it right, just take another 10 shots of the same thing until you get something you like. While this trial-and-error luxury is indeed convenient, it takes some of the worth out of the actual photo. In this way, I feel the digital camera has somewhat cheapened the photographic experience. But this aspect of it has also made photography something that more people can take part in without the need for an enthusiastic interest in creating photographic art. So, the classic double-edged sword. I am reminded of one of Chris Rock's stand-up routines in which he suggests that all bullets should cost $5000. But I digress.

Another thing that the digital camera has done for society: Quite simply, there's more pictures! Without digital cameras, MySpace would be sorely lacking in the area of intentionally-blurry-to-try-to-hide-my-hideous-appearance shots, gratuitous-cleavage-shot-from-the-only-angle-that-makes-her-boobs-look-big pics, and the like. PERISH the thought. But sarcasm and MySpace aside, if we want to see a picture of something, be it a car we're thinking about buying, a computer part or audio component whose inputs and outputs are not necessarily accurately described, or a certain piece of glassware for which words simply cannot do justice, chances are we can punch up a nice, clear 4 megapixel close-up of the widget in question. So, all in all, digital cameras have brought the art and utility of photography to any and all who desire to take part.

This brings me to another piece of now-ubiquitous technology: The cell phone. Like the digital camera, it started as a possibly more-convenient and useful offshoot of an already established technology. Like the digital camera, its convenience and usefulness quickly proved to hold water and the push was on for better, smaller, cheaper, more abundant versions. The interesting thing here is that the paths of these two seemingly separate technologies woud prove to merge as they developed. With cameras proving themselves as the useful indispensable tools that they are, it was only natural that people would want to have one withthem as often as possible. Similarly, a cell phone is only as useful as it is portable. The two properties are linked. And lo, thus begins the age of pants, purses, shirts, coats, center consoles, etc. with built-in cellphone pockets. Hang on, where do you put the digital camera? Surely, it has earned its own pocket. But no, the generally idiotic angry mob that is society decreed that our pants only have room for one electronic accessory. Digital cameras the world over wept as they dangled obtrusively in large dorky cases from tourists' necks.

But wait! A light at the end of the tunnel! November 2000 comes, and along with it, the first camera phone. That's right, folks! Your cellphone pockets can now house two allegedly indispensible pieces of technology, at the same time! All our worries are over!

But even then, the technological itch still seemed to need scratching. Because, you see, back in 1998, Diamond Multimedia, an arguably dying modem manufacturer released the first popular mp3 player, the Rio. With a "generous" 32MB of space, this baby could fit a little bit more than a CD's worth of music at horrifically low bitrates then touted as "high-quality" and was only slightly smaller than the already widely popular portable CD player that I'm sure you all remember from your sordid youth. I know I do. One time, I rigged up a setup with some funky wiring and a plastic hobby battery caddy so I could run mine on D batteries! Alas, although I was the only one who didn't have to buy batteries on the Seventh grade ski trip, I missed out on some good old fashioned girls' hotel room raiding because I was listening to Stone Temple Pilots. Again with the digression.

So anyway, that piece of crap Rio thing turned out to be a big success, helping to usher in an age of music piracy and portability. Now, like the thing what I said before about the pictures and their bein' all over the place, music is not only in our souls, its in our fuckin' pocket. And, like the digi-cam, it was destined to find a home in the cell phones of the financially solvent in a pathetic attempt to either make those people cool or make their unfulfilling jobs seem fun. Ah, the wonders of modern life.

So why the history lesson, you ask? (Here comes a line which is overused in the blogging world -- perhaps signifying the death of language?) I'd be amazed if you actually read all of that! Seriously. I wish I'd made it just a bit more engaging. Well, here's my amazingly simple-minded, chauvinistic, sexist idea that initially motivated me to put forth this drivel:

The Breast-Implant MP3 Player.

You heard me. It's the fucking future, man. No pockets needed. Fuck putting your songs on the cell phone. Fuck music-is-in-your-soul. Music is in YOUR BOOBS! how fucking sweet would that be. Now, ladies, I know some of you might be saying to yourself that breast implants are merely a male-invented, male-encouraged, male-serving, manovation from the land of sexist pigs (America). Well, I'll go ahead and say that I might have to agree. I'm a big fan of breasts and even as scientists work around the clock to make more realistic versions of the implant (improving your breasts since 1963!) the simple reality remains that you can't beat the real thing. But this misses my
point. Let's pretend for just a minute that they DID invent the perfect implant, so real it was totally indistinguishable from those life-force rechargers so necessary to sane existence. Let's imagine them with electronics built in. Now, hear me out. I know, the thought of putting technology inside your body kinda creeps under your skin, right? But come on, people have been extending their lives with pacemakers for 50 years. The silicone implant itself (okay, maybe modern ones are saline) is a foreign material. Isn't there an artificial kidney or lung out there as well? I dunno. Maybe. But anyway, there's no reason that electrical circuits need to be made of rigid materials other than the fact that its easy to lay them out and keep things from coming into contact with each other. Why not gell-based RAM? Why can't a little squishy ball the size of a grape be made to hold 20GB of data? I see no reason. And IC chips? They are essentially made of the same things as memory, that being various configurations of transistors, themselves often made from the surprisingly malleable copper, but perhaps a bit more diverse in properties. So, they'd need to be a little bigger, maybe a cherry tomato. So, lump a couple o' grapes and a cherry tomato or two into a gel sack, and pop that sucker in. Want the 60 gig model? You'll have to step up to the Double D's. Genius! But wait, you say. What about powering the damned thing? Well, the modern pacemaker lasts upwards of five years. Battery tech moves forward just like everything else, albeit more slowly then we’d like. But we live in the era of compact fuel cells, li-poly batteries, and a while back I noticed that the SonicCare toothbrush can charge itself without any physical connection to a power source, presumably through some form of induction. Adapt this for safe intimate use. Not unreasonable. So, how do you listen to the thing? Well.. a semi-reasonable answer to this question escapes me at the moment, but I’m willing to bet that with a little creativity it could be achieved. Just imagine: you’re cuddling with your girlfriend, lovingly caressing her supple, newly enlarged bosom with your face and experienced fingers, occasionally pressing ear to breast to listen to her heartbeat, when suddenly – you are sure you heard it – Barry White appropriately begins emanating from somewhere close but mysteriously hard to pinpoint. “Oh, dear!” She giggles. “You accidentally squeezed play!”

The house went to Hooters in Nashua on Thursday, I offered my services as driver. Got some wings out of the deal. The Nashua Hooters isn't that great. I am not very impressed with Hooters in general. But Nashua doesn't have endless fields of hot women.

Tried to buy some beer whilst in New Hampshire, but the liquor store closed at 9. Isn't that kinda early? I thought so.

I made an appointment to speak with a reference librarian today, about my Suff. She might be able to help me find some cool information. Or not. Who cares. I already have a bunch of stuff so it doesn't really matter either way. But teacher says to do it, I do it.

I am finally polishing off my MQP paper, it feels like I've been working on it since I got to WPI. I also feel like I keep saying I'm finishing it. But now there really isn't all that much more I can possibly write. The daunting task of sifting through and making sure things are formatted correctly still lies ahead, since a lot of it can't be done until the thing is totally finished.

Of course, the amp itself still awaits the wiring of the transformer and the connection of the MOSFETs. I am kinda afraid of what's gonna happen. In theory, it will work and all will be well. In reality, it will explode, killing hundreds in the blast.

Some of the pages are totally half-assed because the whole thing is an experiment in styles and file formats. PNG is huge and I can't really figure out a way to make it smaller.. but it looks sweet because it has true transparency and cool stuff like that. So I wanted to see how the pages would behave if I used PNG files for everything. That didn't go over too welll, cuz the background images were like megs in size, so I stepped down to PNG thumbnails, which are still kinda big. I am also messing around with rollovers and I just got an idea to use transparency in the rollovers, which might look cool.

So.... I'll fix it later, I swear. But the pictures are there. Chances are if you're not in any of the pictures you won't find them too interesting, but hey, if you're bored...

Anybody have a MIG welder handy? I seem to need to weld my desk chair back together. Every time I lean back I come closer to the floor behind me. I just need to lay a small bead about 3 inches around the main support thing. Also, a wire wheel would be handy. I suppose I could do it with a torch or a stick but I'm pretty lazy. And I have neither of these things.
